Motorists on the M61 in Greater Manchester should expect major delays following a crash, National Highways has said.

It said the motorway had been closed between J4 and J2 (M60/ A666) southbound near Bolton, with diversions in place, external and emergency services on the scene.

The road has since been reopened, but residual delays of "at least an hour" remain following the "multi vehicle collision" earlier, National Highways said on X, external.

A spokesperson added: "There is a large amount of fuel/oil and debris across the carriageway.

"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

"Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
