A clampdown on illegal riding in two Warwickshire towns has resulted in 45 e-scooters being seized.

Police confiscated the vehicles, which will now be crushed, during a week-long operation in Nuneaton and Bedworth.

Officers also assisted a man on Friday who dislocated his knee and fractured his collarbone after he crashed into a car while on an e-scooter.

PC Jonny Walker, of Warwickshire Police, said: "It's unfortunate that Friday resulted in such a clear illustration of the risk that e-scooters [can] present both to their riders and to other road users."

Private e-scooters are banned on public land in the UK. However rented e-scooters can be used in the same locations as bicycles, but cannot be ridden on pavements or in an anti-social manner.

Riders caught riding illegally can be given a fine, penalty points on their driving licence, and potentially have their e-scooters seized.

In addition to the scooters, police said one modified electric pushbike, a stolen car and two motorbikes - one of which was being ridden by a 14-year-old without a licence or insurance - were also seized.

The force set up a stand on Saturday for the community to find out more about the law surrounding e-scooters and public roads.
