A not-for-profit organisation which is refurbishing seafront shelters in east Kent is seeking businesses to set up in three of them.

Heritage Lab Ramsgate announced plans in June to restore a total of eight art deco derelict shelters on the town's East Cliff lower promenade for a variety of uses and asked the public for their views and ideas.

The majority of 1,200 respondents supported plans which included a cafe, bar, public toilet and a sauna.

Rob Kenyon, the organisation's CEO, said: "We've been blown away with the level of support from our shelters consultation, which demonstrates huge public interest in the project and our coastal environment."

Mr Kenyon said: "The feedback has led to direct changes to some of our plans and we've had so many good ideas that we will try to incorporate into the scheme.

"We're really grateful to everyone that took the time to give their thoughts and ideas."

The organisation received a variety of suggestions from the public, including living roofs, public water fountains, a defibrillator and a beach shop.

Heritage Lab Ramsgate agreed to take on a 20-year lease from Thanet District Council to redevelop the eight shelters which date from 1936.

The next steps for the project include undertaking all necessary reports and investigations, applying for grant funding and developing final designs with an aim to launch in summer 2026.
