Businesses have been warned of an emerging scam in Basildon

Bars and restaurants have been targeted by fraudsters who are asking for money while posing as council licensing officials.

Basildon Council said scammers had been calling up businesses requesting payments for alleged unpaid licence fees.

The local authority called the scam "sophisticated" and urged businesses not to engage with the callers.

"Council officers will never ask for bank or personal details over the phone," a spokesperson said.

"We always communicate through official channels and send written reminders for any payments due."

One recent incident involved a call from someone claiming to be a licensing officer called "Oscar Fielding", the council said.

The caller falsely accused the business of not paying its licensing fee for five years and demanded immediate payment of £250.

Using mobile number 07783 668040, the scammer repeatedly contacted the licensee, requested sensitive financial information, and attempted to appear legitimate by offering the council's licensing number for verification.

The issue was previously flagged earlier this year, noting that the caller - who identified himself as David - used a mobile number to request payment for licensing fees.
