Water main replacement work at a major road junction in Calderdale will mean delays and diversions for drivers between now and Christmas, Yorkshire Water has warned.

About 4,590 ft (1,400m) of mains would be replaced at the Hipperholme crossroads, the firm said, meaning a temporary road closure early in the scheme and likely traffic delays on a main route from Calderdale to Brighouse, Bradford and Leeds.

The works would also affect side roads around the junction as part of the work, a Yorkshire Water spokesperson said.

A total of £572,000 was being invested in the project to "improve the resilience and reliability of the water network in the area", they added.

Yorkshire Water said it was contacting local residents to keep them updated about progress and planned works – which was due to be completed by late December.

'Reliable network'

Contractors working with Calderdale Council were expected to start work on Monday 8 September, renewing the clean water network along Halifax Road and Leeds Road - starting at the junction of Halifax Road (A58) and Tanhouse Hill, Yorkshire Water said.

Additional work was planned for Barfield Road and Thompson Close with a temporary road closure at the junction in place for about two weeks.

Yorkshire Water said it wanted to thank road users and residents in advance for their patience during the work, adding that it would be completed as quickly as possible with disruption at a minimum.

Scott Gammon, from Yorkshire Water, said the upgrade was essential and would mean "a robust and reliable clean water network, reducing leakage and the likelihood of future bursts, minimising disruption for our customers".

The firm said the work was part of the company's £406m investment to replace water mains across the region, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

The replacement of the 620 miles (1,000km) of pipes formed part of an £8.3bn infrastructure investment over the next five years, the spokesperson explained.
