An annual half-marathon race will go ahead after fears flooding might have forced its cancellation.

Part of the route through Leicester had flooded and organiser Run Leicester warned that rain forecast for Saturday could lead to the event being cancelled.

However, an assessment on Saturday showed that the route had cleared.

Run Leicester said it was "pleased" to confirm that the event will go ahead as planned on Sunday.

In a statement posted online, Run Leicester said: "The route is now clear and we believe will remain so for race day.

"Thank you for your patience.

"We're sure tomorrow will be an incredible race day and we look forward to welcoming you all in the morning."

The half-marathon starts and finishes at Victoria Park.

Initially, runners head through the city and out along Leicester’s golden mile, before looping back in via Watermead Park and Abbey Park, before a final stretch up New Walk.

A 10k race will also be taking place on Sunday, with thousands of people expected to take part in both events.

Temporary road closures will be in place throughout the day.
