A former nightclub and bingo hall in north Devon could be demolished and replaced with accommodation.

Plans for seven flats have been submitted for the club on Ilfracombe High Street, formerly Lucky's, Whispers and Digz.

The owner of the building, Barry Theo, said it was no longer viable as an entertainment venue or indoor market, the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external said.

North Devon Council is due to make a decision about the plans at a later date.

Planning officers said they support the principle of redeveloping the site

Plans have been drawn up for two two-bedroom and five one-bedroom flats around a central courtyard.

The building is part of a terrace flanked by residential and commercial properties. One third of the property, which includes an adjoining cafe and two residential units, are owned separately.

The council's planning officers have raised concerns about the number of properties and potential overlooking from courtyard windows, but said they support the principle of redevelopment.

Planning agent LPA Architecture and Design said concerns about internal privacy were "disproportionate", as these issues had been "meticulously addressed" through window placements and measures such as opaque glazing.
