A 12-year-old boy died in a crash after riding a quad bike for "a bus length", an inquest has heard.

Harvey Connor was fatally injured on a farm at Lowick Green, near Ulverston in Cumbria, after falling off the vehicle which then rolled over him.

He had been driven on the bike by his stepfather who had turned off the engine and begun to unravel an electric fence when Harvey switched on the engine and moved off.

At Cockermouth Coroners' Court, coroner Margaret Taylor said it would be necessary to hold a full inquest into Harvey's death.

The crash took place at a neighbouring farm to the one where Harvey lived near Greenodd.

Afterwards, his stepfather went to Harvey, "scooped him up and placed him on his knees" and drove him on the quad bike to his mother's address, the coroner said.

"I have been given a cause of death due to a head injury which was caused during a quad bike accident."

The inquest was formally opened and adjourned to a provisional date of 23 January 2025.
