Plymouth City Council said plans for the former Quality Hotel site were still going ahead

Plans for a 150-bed Hilton hotel on derelict land off Plymouth Hoe are still in the pipeline despite slow progress, the city council says.

However, before it is built, Plymouth City Council has applied for consent from its planning department to use the former Quality Hotel site as a storage area for city centre redevelopment works for up to two years.

The council said the land was being used as a storage area by a private contractor replacing cladding on apartments and that it was seeking a temporary change of use to store materials for public schemes.

It said it wanted to "reiterate this is only a temporary use as the intention is still very much to have the site redeveloped".

"There have been legal matters concerning the site and this has slowed progress," it said.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported the council said it planned to move the material, mainly stone, from a compound at Millbay to the Cliff Road site to enable groundwork for an affordable housing development in Bath Street.

The Quality Hotel was demolished in 2016 with the site remaining empty since.

It estimated that the storage material would take up half of the site which would diminish over the next two years as it was required for city centre improvement projects.
