Network Rail is carrying out emergency repairs on a level crossing after it was hit by a motorist.

Safety barriers at the Coundon Road crossing in Coventry were damaged by a car in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The road has been closed between Stanier Avenue and Tomson Avenue while the work is carried out.

The rail operator apologised to affected road users, external and said it hoped to restore the barriers as soon as possible.

Train services in the area continue to operate as normal, while a diversion has been put in place for motorists.

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed it was called to reports a car had "nudged and damaged" the crossing barrier at about 03:45 GMT.

A spokesperson added inquiries continued and asked anyone with information to contact the force.

West Midlands Police said its officers attended the scene to assist.
