A motorist from Stoke-on-Trent has had his driving ban extended after racking up 96 points on his licence.

Staffordshire Police said officers stopped a vehicle on Christine Street in Bucknall on Boxing Day after it showed up as being uninsured.

They found the 23-year-old driver was already disqualified and subsequently seized the vehicle.

He was reported for driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

The man was given a further extension to his driving ban, meaning he is now banned from driving until 2027, Staffordshire Police said.

In a tweet, the force said in this case it would also be talking to the Crown Prosecution Service about making representations for a prison sentence.

People who accumulate 12 or more points on their licence, external within a three-year period can face a six-month driving ban.

They face a 12-month ban if they pick up a second disqualification within three years, and a two-year ban if they get a third disqualification in a three-year period.

Police explained this can happen when drivers ignore the punishment and continue to drive, then get caught and carry on accumulating more points.

Anyone who is disqualified for 56 days or longer must apply for a new licence before driving again, and may be required to take an extended driving test.
