New path to boost cycling and walking

Councillors hope the cycle path will boost the number of families who walk or cycles to school

A new cycle path is being constructed to boost the number of children who walk or cycle to school, Wiltshire Council has said.

Planning permission has been granted for the new route, which will run to Melksham Oak Secondary School, on Bowerhill.

Once complete, it will link a new housing development from Rocket Road in east Melksham to the school.

“Our plans for this new, fully-lit path meets our business plan commitment to increase walking and cycling," said cabinet member for transport and assets, Tamara Reay.

Protecting wildlife

She added: "We know that this can have a positive effect on children’s health and wellbeing, as well as helping to contribute to our commitment to reduce Wiltshire’s carbon footprint and improve air quality."

Under the planning permission rules, measures have to be taken to protect the local wildlife.

This includes safeguarding trees along the route and ensuring lighting does not have a negative impact on wildlife.

“Once this process is complete, we will start work on site as soon as possible," said Mrs Reay.

"We will have more information on a start date and completion date for the work in the coming weeks.”
