The body of a woman has been found by firefighters called to tackle a house fire in Birmingham.

She was discovered on the ground floor of the two-storey end of terrace home on Cotterills Lane, Alum Rock after the fire started at about 01:55 BST on Monday, the fire service said.

The blaze was out before fire crews arrived and paramedics confirmed the woman had died at the scene.

The smoke-logged building was ventilated and the fire service said they checked the neighbouring property.

The service, which said its crews left the scene at about 04:45 BST, said two fire engines from Ward End and Sheldon were sent to the house.

"Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this incident," a spokesperson added.

West Midlands Police was asked for a response.
