The building in Wharf Street used to be a shoe factory

Part of an historical former shoe factory in Leicester could be demolished to create flats.

Plans have been lodged with Leicester City Council to build a six storey block of 55 flats on the site in Wharf Street.

Developers Design Studio Architects said the 1800s-built building's Gothic revival frontage would be kept if the plan was approved.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said there had been an objection to the scheme.

The objector's letter to the council said: “The proposal shows no respect for the design and massing of the historically significant building that is to be retained on the site.

"The existing building is an integral part of the area’s character, and the proposed generic block demonstrates a disregard for its heritage, thereby undermining the site’s historical value.”

The locally listed building was formerly home to the 1990s nightclub Starlite 2001
