Funds totalling just over £23m have been approved for a new section of road in Cumbria.

The cash from the Department for Transport will go towards a 1.4km (0.8-mile) stretch on the A595 between Chapels and Grizebeck.

It is part of the Team Barrow project focused on infrastructure to support future employment growth at BAE Systems.

Phil Greenup from Westmorland and Furness Council said: "We have worked hard to get this far and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this scheme has."

Work is due to start in autumn with the council partly funding the scheme alongside the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP), which is allocating more than £2m.

Jo Lappin, chief executive of the CLEP said: "This investment will help deliver the LEP’s growth ambitions and make it easier for businesses, employees and the community to travel around the county."
