Devon and Cornwall Police has referred itself to the police complaints watchdog following the death of a woman who fell from cliffs in Newquay.

Officers were called to the Barrowfields area at about 19:30 BST on Monday after receiving reports of concern for the welfare of a woman.

A police spokesperson said: "The woman, who was in her 20s and from the Newquay area, was pronounced deceased at the scene after falling from cliffs."

The force said the death was not being treated as suspicious at this time, but due to prior contact with the woman it had made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A spokesperson said: "Due to prior police contact with the woman on Saturday, 18 May, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is normal procedure in these circumstances."

Officers believe the woman had been with a number of other people before the fall and have asked for anyone with information to contact them.
