A swan has been killed in a suspected dog attack.
The bird was reported to have been attacked by a dog or several dogs and was spotted drifting into Maryport Harbour on Thursday morning, Cumbria Police said.
Volunteers from Maryport Rescue, Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and AniMel Haven - an animal charity - rescued the swan, but it was later put down by a vet due to the extent of its injuries.
Police called on dog owners to keep their pets under control when out and appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack to contact them.
The coastguard said the swan had been spotted on the River Ellen, drifting into the harbour.
It happened at about 07:00 BST and the swan was rescued by the North pier.
"Cumbria Police is investigating and encouraging anyone who witnessed what occurred – or who has other information which may assist – to come forward," a police spokesman said.
