The Longmynd Hike had to be called off on Friday because of safety concerns

The organisers of a popular 50-mile endurance walk, which had to be called off because of Storm Amy, have said it will not be rearranged.

Hundreds were due to take part in the Longmynd Hike, a 24-hour challenge over the Shropshire Hills.

The event, which has been running for 58 years, was due to set off from Church Stretton on Saturday but was called off over safety concerns.

Organiser Dave Betton said attention would now shift to next year's event.

He said the organiser had been in touch with those due to take part and the response to the last-minute cancellation on Friday had been very positive.

Mr Betton added: "We've had people saying it was 'a shame, but it's the right call for safety reasons', 'we don't want our money back, or 'we'll donate it to the Scouts or whoever you want to give it to'."

He said the response had cheered the organisers and made them grateful to everyone involved.

But he said rearranging the event would have taken time, and loss of daylight in the autumn and winter months was also an issue.

This year's hike had been dedicated to the memory of the event's late chairman Terry Davies, who died in June.
