Gillhams wants to expand into the former butcher's shop next door

A cafe and delicatessen in Oswestry has submitted plans to expand into the disused shop next door.

The plans would see Gillhams knock through into the former premises of The Butchery on Church Street.

Planning documents, external stated the change of use would allow the Grade II listed building to be "enjoyed rather than neglected".

Under the plans, to be considered by Shropshire Council, the frontage of the butcher's shop would be redesigned to match the existing cafe.

The proposals would keep a historic stone monument between the two stores, marking the site of the former New Gate into the town, which was removed at the end of the 18th Century.

The move comes amid efforts to bring empty units back into use in the town.

Oswestry Town Council has said that while it has fewer vacant shops than comparable places, it would like to bring as many as possible back into use.

It has offered businesses grants of up to £5,000, external to do so.
