A mountain rescue team has warned about the risks of campfires to surrounding woodlands after it discovered three blazes over the weekend.

Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team said it had been alerted to a fire in a remote part of the Cheviots on Sunday morning.

A group of walkers had discovered the remnants of a campfire which had spread to the surrounding peat, which posed a "significant risk" to the Uswayford Forest area, it said.

The fire was stopped by the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service before it spread any further.

The rescue team said it was one of three which were discovered in the Coquetdale on Sunday morning.

It said people should not have any open fires or disposable barbeques in the countryside and that cigarettes should be extinguished completely.

The team also advised people to be careful where they parked as vehicle exhausts and catalytic converters could get "very hot" and could cause a fire if parked on dry vegetation.

It also said access roads, tracks and gates should not be blocked by parked vehicles.

The team said if members of the public spotted a wildfire in the countryside, they should call 999 as soon as possible.
