Tributes to lorry driver who died in M6 crash

Tributes have been paid to a man who was killed when he was struck by a car on the M6.

Cliff Tamou, from Wigan, died in the crash on the southbound carriageway between junctions 15 for Stoke-on-Trent and 16 for Crewe shortly before 22:00 GMT on Thursday.

The 58-year-old's lorry had broken down and he was out of the vehicle when he was hit by a Toyota Avensis, Staffordshire Police said.

A 22-year-old man from Dudley, who was driving the Toyota, suffered leg and facial injuries. He has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Tamou's family said he moved to the UK from New Zealand more than 30 years ago, settling in Wigan.

They described him as a devoted husband, father to six children and grandfather to five grandchildren.

"He was a lorry driver for many years and loved playing, refereeing and coaching rugby," the family said.

Staffordshire Police have appealed for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.
