Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was seriously injured in a crash involving a broken-down car.

A Volkswagen camper van collided with a Smart car that had broken down on the westbound carriageway in Marine Drive in Ovingdean, Brighton, at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday, Sussex Police said.

The driver of the Smart car, a woman in her 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and has since been discharged.

A 39-year-old woman, from Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving.

She has been bailed while enquiries continue.

The force are asking anyone who witnessed the crash between the Ovingdean roundabout and Brighton Marina, or has dash cam footage, to contact them.
