Four armed men carried out what police described as an "abhorrent" attack on a 37-year-old man in front of his partner and child after dragging him from his home.

The victim suffered serious injuries in the assault outside his house in Cardross Avenue in Broxburn, West Lothian, at about 19:30 on Monday.

His partner and child were not injured but police said they were left "very frightened" by what happened.

The attackers fled in a white or silver van and drove off towards Cardross Road. No description of the men has so far been released.

Det Sgt Tony Gilhooley, of Livingston CID, appealed for anyone who saw or heard the attack to contact police., external

He said: "The fact that the suspects knew the child was in the house but continued with this vicious attack is abhorrent and it is imperative that we trace those responsible.

"Officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries and viewing CCTV to identify the men and trace the van.

"We would be keen to view any dashcam or doorbell footage from the street between 7pm and 7.45pm on Monday night just in case it caught footage that would assist the investigation."
