A new parking payment provider has been appointed for parts of Devon.

South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council said residents and visitors could "enjoy the simplicity" of cashless parking in about 4,300 parking spaces across 53 off-street locations.

The company PayByPhone started running the service on 12 January.

The councils said motorists could still pay by cash at one of the machines if they preferred.

'Quick and easy'

Councillor Victor Abbott, South Hams District Council's executive member for community services and operations, said the council was "always looking at ways that we can improve our efficiencies and services for our residents".

Councillor Adam Bridgewater, West Devon Borough Council's hub manager for neighbourhood services, added: "We have such wonderful towns here in West Devon and we want to make sure both our residents and visitors can park as easily and quickly as possible."

The council said registration with the new provider was "quick and easy".

Managing director for PayByPhone Adam Dolphin said: "We are thrilled to launch in the South Hams and West Devon, helping to simplify the parking experience for residents and visitors to this wonderful area."
