A cordon was put up while the fire service extinguished the flames.
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said five people were treated and discharged at the scene.
NEAS added it dispatched two double-crewed ambulances, a hazardous area response team vehicle and a clinical team leader.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said three crews from Newcastle Central and West Denton Community fire stations attended.
"Breathing apparatus and hose reels were used to extinguish the fire within the property," a spokesperson said.
