Dalian Atkinson charitable fund aims to raise £1m

The organisers of a new charity fund, set up in memory of footballer Dalian Atkinson, have started a campaign to raise £1m.

The Dalian Atkinson Legacy Fund aims to provide equal opportunities for young people aged five to 25, across Telford and Wrekin and surrounding areas, to participate in a range of sports - including football.

It was set up by his family, in partnership with Shropshire Community Foundation.

The former Aston Villa striker, who grew up in Telford, died in 2016, aged 48.

The West Mercia police and crime commissioner, and Telford & Wrekin Council have each donated £10,000 to kickstart the fund.

Mr Atkinson's family said they wanted to celebrate his lifelong passion for sport, and its positive impact.

"We are proud to be collaborating with Dalian’s family and so many amazing clubs and individuals," said Selina Graham, Deputy Lieutenant for Shropshire, and chair of trustees at Shropshire Community Foundation.

"This legacy fund will improve the lives of others in his name for many years to come.

"We believe that football can empower young people to navigate life’s challenges and become thriving members of our community,” she added.

Mr Atkinson was recruited by Ipswich Town aged 17, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 1989, and Aston Villa in 1991.

His solo goal against Wimbledon in 1992 is regarded as one of his most iconic footballing moments.

He retired from the professional football in 2001.
