Community devastated after fire destroys garden

The fire destroyed a shed and seating areas as well as part of the fence

Workers at a Hull community garden said they were "devastated" after a fire destroyed buildings.

Firefighters were called to the Rainbow Community Garden during the early hours of Friday morning.

The blaze destroyed a shed containing equipment and seating areas, as well part of a fence and surrounding trees.

Brenda, who helps run the centre, said: "It’s very emotional we have a lot invested in that area".

The garden provides a social space for people in north Hull

The community garden on Levisham Close provides an outdoor space as well as drop in craft sessions for adults and children and work experience for young people.

It also takes part in social prescribing for people with mental health issues.

"It’s a lifeline for some people," Brenda said. "They come and do a bit a of work have a chat.

"It’s the social aspect. The space means a lot to local people."

Nobody was injured in the blaze and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service described the cause of fire as "undetermined".

Brenda and her colleague Emma said they were "blown away" by the community's response to the fire.

Brenda added that people had contacted her "asking to come and clear up and asking what can we do to help".

An online appeal has been launched which has raised more than £600 so far.

The garden will remain closed for the rest of this week and it is hoped to reopen soon.
