A 71-year-old man died after he got out of his car on a motorway and was hit by a van.
The crash happened on the M20 in Kent, coastbound between junction eight at Maidstone and junction nine at Ashford, at about 22:20 GMT on Friday.
A blue Kia Carens had stopped on the hard shoulder, the driver got out of it and was struck by an Iveco box van, Kent Police said.
The man died at the scene.
A female passenger in the car suffered minor injuries.
Kent Police said the driver of the van was assisting officers with their inquiries.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
