A 90-year-old man has completed an epic charity challenge by walking 90 miles in nine consecutive days.

Derrick Downs finished his hike around Kent in his hometown Margate on Thursday afternoon.

The nonagenarian has so far raised more than £19,000 for Oasis, a charity helping victims of domestic abuse.

He said he felt "very grateful" that he had "been able to stay fit enough to complete the challenge".

Mr Downs said it had been a "memorable experience" but he was "looking forward to getting home".

He said he felt "satisfaction" and "pleasure" that people had been so kind and generous.

Mr Downs set off from Dover on his 90th birthday on 22 January.

He has walked through storm force winds and heavy rain and even came to the aid of a woman who had fallen and had a serious head injury.

He met up with an old neighbour from the 1950s who he had not seen since.

Mr Downs said: "He recognised me from being on the news and happened to be holidaying in Kent so he found me on my route."

The charity walker surpassed his original fundraising target of £9,000 by day two of the hike.

Mr Downs said: "I'm very encouraged that people have responded donating so much money.

"People waving and honking has been very encouraging."

He added: "My body is feeling alright."

Jennie Gardener, from Oasis, said: "He could easily have done an event that took one day and no effort, but instead he's putting in all the effort and more, and smiling through it all.

"He's amazing."
