A man died when he was hit by a lorry after his car broke down on the M1.

Bedfordshire Police said it was called at about 02:25 BST on Sunday to reports of a broken-down vehicle between Junction 12 for Toddington and Junction 13 for Milton Keynes South.

It is thought the driver was hit by a lorry while walking along the motorway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: "It is believed the driver of the vehicle exited to get assistance and was involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle while walking along the carriageway."

Any witnesses have been asked to come forward.
