A proposal to sell off land for affordable homes is to go before councillors in a county where housing is "a major issue".

Westmorland and Furness Council is considering selling land in Kendal, Cumbria, to South Lakes Housing which plans to build 25 homes, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external.

The development, at High Sparrowmire, would be made up of nine properties available for social rent and 16 for shared ownership.

A report to the council states: "We need more affordable, quality housing so local families can build a life here and new people be attracted to relocate."

The report adds: "Much of the existing housing stock presents challenges and gives rise to rural and urban fuel poverty and health issues with consequences for young people and families."

A government report found Cumbria is a hotspot for holiday lets and second homes, external, but that has led some to struggle to find affordable homes to rent.

Westmorland and Furness Council's cabinet will discuss the proposals on 15 October.
