Young poets sought for city competition

Young poets have been asked to write about friendship for a competition.

Wolverhampton's library service in searching for a Young Poet Laureate, aged 12-18, and a Primary Poet Champion, aged seven to 11, to represent the city.

Entrants are asked to write a poem entitled "life is better with friends" for the event, which has been organised as part of next year's Wolverhampton Literature Festival.

Some of the speakers have previously been revealed for the festival, which runs from 31 January to 2 February, at various venues in the city.

Entries need to be emailed by 29 November and teachers can contact City of Wolverhampton Council, external with any questions.

Finalists will be invited to an event to find the overall winner in each age category, the council said.

"We're looking for Wolverhampton's next Young Poet Laureate and Primary Poet Champion so, if you're a poet and you know it, here's your chance to show off your talents to the whole city," said Robert Johnson the council's head of service for community information.
