Campaigners fight plans for 1,700 homes

Plans for a large housing development are an "abomination", according to campaigners.
More than 1,700 homes could be built on the outskirts of Frome, Somerset, at the Selwood Garden Community (SGC), between the A361 and the southern edge of the town.
Tina Meldon from Stop Selwood Garden Community group said: "We don't have the infrastructure to cope with all the extra traffic. It's not feasible, it's an abomination".
Grass Roots Planning, which represents the applicant Land Value Alliances (LVA) said the site "will deliver much needed homes including 510 affordable properties, the majority of which will be social rented housing".
The development will also include a local centre and community hub, two residential care homes and a 420-place primary school.
Outline plans were submitted in 2021 but a decision was delayed in 2022 after National Highways raised concerns about the impact on the nearby A36.
LVA has now put forward changes which relocate some of the homes and is aiming to improve the site's environmental impact.
Joe Hannam from the Stop Selwood Garden Community group said: "There are massive environmental concerns with this site and anything here will add to the pressure on local services."
The amended plans make numerous changes including relocating orchards and allotments and planting more woodland.
Grass Roots Planning said: "Additionally, an extensive mitigation package is being put forward to ensure that local infrastructure is reinforced to meet the needs of new residents."
People in Frome have until 31 March to have their say on the plans.
Somerset Council is expected to make a decision by the end of the year.
