A man has undergone surgery for "numerous fractures” to his leg after an incident at a Devon rugby ground, police say.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the alleged assault on 20 April began after two men became involved in a "discussion" at the Exeter Chiefs' Sandy Park.

One man "shoved the other backwards causing him to fall to the ground" and then allegedly "stamped on the man's ankle a number of times, resulting in numerous fractures to the leg and ankle", police said.

The injured man was taken to hospital and a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent before being released on police bail, they added.

Officers said they were appealing for witnesses to the incident, which took place between 21:30 BST and 23:00 in the toilet area next to the Powderham Castle Bar.
