Marks and Spencer has announced plans to open a new £4m food hall in Selby.

The company said the site, at Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road, was expected to open in the autumn.

The development comes as part of the firm's plans to reduce the number of "full-line" stores, increase its number of grocery outlets and relocate some stores out of town centres.

The programme has seen city centre M&S sites in both Bradford and Barnsley close.

The retailer has previously said it wanted fewer but better main stores, as shoppers spend more online, as well as to expand its food business.

Speaking about the food hall in Selby, the firm said it would build on more than £20m it had invested in its stores across Yorkshire in the last financial year.

Nikki McKidd, M&S stores director for the North of England and Scotland, said: “We have over 40 stores across Yorkshire and the Humber and it’s fantastic to be investing an additional £4m for shoppers in Selby."

She said the store would be working with food redistribution platform Neighbourly to select a local charity to donate any edible surplus food too.

M&S has not confirmed how many jobs the Selby store will create, but has indicated recruitment would take place over the summer.
