A police crime scene is currently in place at Sherwood Avenue and Abbey Meadows in the town, and the deceased woman's next of kin have been informed.

Det Insp Stuart May said: "I also understand the concern that this may cause within the community, but we believe this was an isolated incident in which the victim and suspect were known to each other.

"We do not believe there is a threat to the wider public."

He also urged anyone with information that may assist the police investigation to come forward.
