Man in court for forcing way into woman's home

A man has appeared in court for punching and sexually assaulting a woman after forcing his way into her home.

The man, who was unknown to the victim, knocked on her door in Ashington, Northumberland, between 23:45 BST on 24 September and 02:20 the next day, Northumbria Police said.

A 20-year-old was arrested and charged with intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and sexual assault.

He entered no plea at North Shields Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 22 November.
