People in Jersey have expressed concerns about plans to build a bin shelter and electric substation.

The bin shelter would be about 3m (10ft) tall and 11m (36ft) wide shed along the promenade at Gorey, its application says.

The planning application was submitted jointly by Jersey Electricity and the Parish of St Martin but residents have said the plan "beggars belief".

A Jersey Electricity spokesperson said the "essential upgrade" would have a "positive "impact on the area.

'Concrete excrescence'

Fraser Martin, who has expressed concerns, said: "To put up a concrete excrescence here on this beautiful part of the island beggars believe."

Critic Tracy McKerrell added: "There's been no public consultation, there's been very little consultation with any of the businesses that actually use the bins."

She added she believed there should be a bin store where the bins were currently.

A spokesperson from Jersey Electricity said: "The current electricity network supplying the Gorey Harbour area is operating at full capacity, which poses a significant limitation on future domestic and commercial development in the region."

It added the proposed new substation was crucial to address this issue.

It said: "This essential upgrade will have a positive impact on the area, improving the current parish bin store and creating a safe and attractive pedestrian gateway to the castle."

A date for the application to be considered has yet to be set.
