An 18-year-old driver has been arrested after a police officer was dragged along by a vehicle in Cheltenham on Tuesday.

Officers on patrol spotted a man they suspected to be under the influence of alcohol returning to a parked car on St James Square at 15:00 BST and requested he take a breath test.

But instead of getting into the police vehicle, the suspect got into his own car while the officer was trying to detain him and drove off, Gloucestershire Police said.

The officer was dragged along with the car, resulting in minor injuries.

The man then drove away before crashing his car into parked vehicles and an electricity pylon in a nearby street, the force said.

The 18-year-old, from Buckinghamshire, was eventually detained after fleeing the scene on foot and being tasered by officers.

He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

The suspect remains in custody for questioning, Gloucestershire Police, and anyone with relevant mobile phone, CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to contact the force.
