An historic market is due to be overhauled as part of plans to regenerate a town centre.

The £390,000 scheme in Newcastle-under-Lyme was approved by the borough council in the autumn, the authority said.

The plans provide the same number of pitches as the current layout, but once finished the scheme will include four parking bays for short stays as well as a public space running through the centre of lower High Street, the council said.

Deputy leader Stephen Sweeney said the markets played an important role in the daily life of the town.

“This significant investment will upgrade stalls, support traders and make the whole area more appealing."

The plans also include the possibility of a digital screen in the lower High Street by a public space where people can congregate to watch big events, the council said.

The existing taxi rank area will remain unchanged, while the area around a digital screen would be landscaped after installation they added.

Money for the work has come from the authority’s successful bid to the government’s Future High Street Fund.
