A library has had its windows smashed twice in recent weeks.

Blyth South Beach Library in Northumberland was damaged on 26 April and 12 May.

Northumbria Police is investigating both incidents.

Northumberland County councillor Daniel Carr said it was "disheartening to see our valuable community resource subjected to mindless vandalism".

Mr Carr also said the vandalism could have been prevented if CCTV had been installed at the library.

He said he had asked for the cameras to be installed a year earlier, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external.

There were now plans to install a perimeter fence around the library to protect it from further harm, the Conservative councillor said.

"We can’t go on like this because it will happen again,” he added.

“We need something in place now. I'm just pleased this work is going to go ahead and we can get this resolved."

The police said anyone with information about the smashed windows should contact them.
