A missing section of a flood defence scheme in West Sussex designed to prevent a flood risk to "a significant number of homes and businesses" is to be completed.

Adur District Council voted unanimously to provide planning permission for the 1.5m (5ft) sea wall in Shoreham alongside land owned by Sussex Yacht Club.

A flood defence, external was put in place in the town five years ago, but a gap was left for the yacht club to build a new club room.

It had asked for further delays whilst public rights of way across its land was sorted, but this was declined.

Kim Matthews, a Shoreham fisherman, speaking before the planning committee meeting, said: "The flood wall needs to be built. There is some urgency.

"In April the water was over the road again and into the houses."

An Adur District Council spokesperson had said they wanted work on the flood defences to begin "as soon as possible".
