Two men have been arrested on suspicion of explosive offences after a bomb squad was called to a recycling centre.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD) joined police at the Pallion Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Sunderland on Friday to investigate reports of a "suspicious item" at the site.

On Sunday, two men from Sunderland aged 56 and 53 were arrested. Counter terror officers and Northumbria Police were continuing their investigation but said there was not believed to be any immediate risk to the local community.

The recycling centre closed on Friday but Sunderland City Council confirmed it had reopened on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Counter Terrorism Policing said two residential properties in the city were being searched in connection with the investigation.
