Police are investigating a "reckless and dangerous" incident in which something was thrown from a bridge onto an ambulance rushing to an emergency.

The unknown object shattered the ambulance's windscreen on Wednesday at about 15:30 BST on the A120 near Stansted, Essex.

About £500-worth of damage was caused to the vehicle but the crew were unhurt.

Det Con Clair Ward, of Braintree CID, said the incident was being treated as criminal damage to a vehicle endangering life.

The ambulance driver told police the object was thrown from the B1256 bridge at the Dunmow West turn-off.

Det Con Ward added: "Throwing objects from a bridge is both reckless and dangerous.

"Thankfully, the crew weren't harmed, but the consequences could have been very serious.

"This is completely unacceptable and we would ask for the public's help."

Police have appealed for CCTV, dashcam and any other footage that might be of help to their investigation.
