Hundreds of people have donned white bed sheets in an attempt to set a new world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as ghosts.

Organisers of the spectre-cular event in Dorchester hoped to beat the record of 560, which was set in 2017 by a school in Ireland.

The attempt fell short of its target, with 346 revellers joining a Halloween party with music and dancing in Brewery Square.

Another effort in the Dorset town last year also failed, after rain dampened spirits, with only 204 apparitions.

Last year's attempt failed because of wet weather

Mercy School Mounthawk in Tralee set the world record in March 2017.

An attempt, organised by Manchester City Council in 2022, also failed when bad weather put people off attending.
