Armed police arrested a man, seized three knives and found a cosh after being tipped off about a "weapons exchange".

Officers made the discoveries after stopping a car in Bromley Road, Colchester, shortly after 14:00 BST on Wednesday.

They arrested the driver, aged in his 30s, on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He was taken into custody for questioning as the investigation continued, Essex Police said.

Adam Pipe, of the force's operational policing command, said: "I'd like to extend my thanks to the person who reported the initial suspicious activity to us.

"The speed at which this vehicle was identified and the urgency shown by the armed officers to get behind it as quickly as possible shows the commitment we have."
