Six months of roadworks to begin outside hospital

The hospital says work will be carried out on "all four arms of the roundabout"

Roadworks scheduled to last six months are expected to begin on Monday outside one of the East of England's busiest hospitals.

Access improvement works costing £1m will be carried out to the roundabout on Colney Lane leading to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).

Drivers have been warned to expect delays and asked to use public transport where possible.

The hospital said emergency vehicles on blue lights would be prioritised throughout the duration of the works.

NNUH's director of strategy and major projects, Simon Hackwell said: "Unfortunately this is likely to cause some delays for people visiting and working at the hospital, therefore we ask that people look for the alternative routes available and plan their journeys in advance so that any disruption is kept to a minimum."

The hospital said the work was expected to improve traffic flow and deliver better pedestrian and cycle access to the hospital and Norwich Research Park.

As part of the work, Colney Lane East - which leads to the hospital from Round House Way - will be closed to traffic for four weeks in early 2025.

Alternative access will be via Hethersett Lane and Rosalind Franklin Road, which provides a direct route to the multi-storey car park and the hospital access road.

Norfolk County Council said it had worked with the hospital and contractors - which are leading the project - to minimise disruption.

Planning permission for the Norwich Research Park, granted in 2013, included conditions that required off-site infrastructure to enable safe and sustainable access to the park.

Bus services will continue on their usual route and cycle and pedestrian access will also be maintained.
