A special homecoming event to celebrate the success of Sir Mark Cavendish has been postponed by a day due to forecast poor weather.

The lap of honour around the raceway at the National Sports Centre (NSC) will now take place at 13:00 BST on Friday.

Sir Mark, who set a new record for stage wins at the Tour de France by securing his 35th victory in July, will cycle a lap of the track where he first started competitive cycling as a child.

Local children have been invited to join the Manx Missile for the lap on their own bicycles.

Organisers said only those on two-wheel bikes, without balancers or stabilisers, will be able to take part, and participants must be bring their helmets with them and arrive by 12:45.

People have also been invited to line the raceway around the NSC to welcome Sir Mark back to the island for his first visit since breaking Eddy Merckx's record.

While the lap had originally been due to take place in Thursday, organisers pushed it back by a day due forecast wet and windy conditions throughout the morning and early afternoon.
