Four people have been injured in a crash on a major road following a police pursuit.

Officers were called to reports of knives seen at an address in the village of Althorne, in Essex, at about 13:10 GMT with two suspects leaving the scene in a car.

Officers followed the vehicle and it crashed with a van on the northbound carriageway of the A130 spur road between the A13 and A127. Two people were injured in each vehicle - with the car driver sustaining potentially life-changing injuries, police said.

A driver and passenger in one of the cars was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Essex Police said the northbound section of the A130 remained closed while investigation work was carried out.

It expected the road to remain closed for several hours but the southbound carriageway had reopened.
