A record number of people have entered to take part in the Worcester City Run on its 10th anniversary.

The event will have about 4,900 runners, the biggest entry number to date.

Olympian Steve Cram, who organises the race, said entries for the half marathon and 10k race have now closed ahead of the events on Saturday and Sunday.

The former 1,500m world champion called the number of people joining in "phenomenal".

The Team GB track and field athlete oversees the city's half marathon, 10k and junior routes.

Mr Cram told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "The reputation for the run has grown. It's a lovely place to come and we put on a good event that people enjoy."

"It always a challenge for all events post-Covid but this year has been phenomenal.

"We've had to close entries for the half marathon and the 10k is now closed as well."

The Worcester City Runs, including a family relay event, take place in the city on 14 and 15 September.

The annual families on track event will take place on Saturday.

He said: "Four-year-olds to 94-year-olds can come and take part. It's great fun and very colourful. I love going to Worcester - it's a great place."
